Armand Duplantis beat his close friend Karsten Warholm in a 100-meter exhibition sprint at the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich.
Duplantis, a two-time Olympic pole vault champion, never relinquished the lead after emerging from the blocks to break the Warholm 400m hurdles world record in 10.37 seconds.
Norwegian Warholm ran a personal best 10.47 in the race, dubbed the “100m to settle it all” by joint Weltklasse organizers Zurich, Puma and Red Bull.
Duplantis said afterward: “I’m pretty excited. How can I not be, I mean, come on! Stop playing! »
Warholm added: “I have to give it to Mondo. He beat me today fair and square. It was a great race. He was quickly out of the blocks. Congratulations man!
Swede Duplantis showed off his natural speed in Wednesday night’s challenge ahead of Thursday’s penultimate Wanda Diamond League meet at the same venue.
The two close friends have been arguing over who is faster over 100m ever since Warholm commented on how fast Duplantis was on the pole vault track during practice over a year ago.
Duplantis then challenged Warholm to a race and anticipation among fans grew on social media.
Warholm grimaced when Duplantis handed him a Swedish racing vest and recalled the loser’s forfeit, which is to wear it in his 400m hurdles race at the Diamond League meeting tomorrow.
