James Maddison admits Tottenham mentality after dramatic collapse in Brighton defeat

James Maddison admitted Tottenham collapsed mentally in the second half to lose 3-2 at Brighton.

Spurs took a two-goal first-half lead at the Amex after goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison. However, a second-half collapse saw Brighton score three goals to take all three points on Sunday.

A visibly disappointed Maddison spoke in a post-match interview after the match, admitting that Spurs collapsed too easily.

“Yes, that definitely could have been the case,” he told Sky Sports when asked if his team had struggled mentally and lost their temper after their first-half performance.

“Brighton are a good team and have good players. But in adversity in the Premier League, you have to stay strong, you have to weather the storm a little.

“The best teams stay strong at that time and weather the storm – we certainly didn’t do that.”

On why Spurs couldn’t react after conceding that first goal, and conceded three in the space of 18 minutes, Maddison added: “We couldn’t deal with the change in momentum . We lost control of the match from the first goal.

“We mismanaged our momentum and we couldn’t control the game. When they were approaching us, it was like one attack after another. We couldn’t manage it and they managed to score three goals.

“We had a good run, but we feel like we took a few steps back today. We were saying all the right things so we wouldn’t become complacent, but words don’t mean anything if you don’t show it.”
