On the last Thursday in September, 18 young people and their parents went to the Trefloyne Junior Golf Academy for a free introductory session.

The idea was to see if they would like to learn more about the game. So there was a series of games to get the youngsters swinging clubs and hitting balls, as well as some tips and demonstrations from the coach PGA Advanced Matthew Rees of MTR Golf Performance.

Like all sessions at Trefloyne Junior Academy, the emphasis was on having a go and, above all, having fun.

And judging by the faces and comments, everyone certainly did, all saying they can’t wait to be back to start New2Golf, Wales Golf’s subsidized training programme.

This New2Golf group will fit in alongside the two other groups of enthusiastic young golfers who come to the coaching sessions at Trefloyne on a Thursday evening, under the spotlight as the nights get darker.

Parents also had a nice surprise, because all the young people who came and wanted to go further received a free junior membership at Trefloyne Golf Club until next April.

This will provide access to all coaching sessions and equipment, such as clubs and balls.

And as a few parents said, it makes a difference when it can be expensive to get into a sport and it’s not clear if it’s something they’ll continue to do.
