Girl Refuses to Sleep in Her Bedroom, Dad Sets Up a Camera and Discovers the Chilling Reason Why

Becoming a stepmother is rarely easy. Even with the best intentions, stepmothers regularly face resistance, becoming targets of a child’s resentment or grief. No matter how much they try to bond with their stepchildren, they’re often unfairly cast as villains, symbols of change, and reminders of a life lost.

When Eric Jacobson brought his new partner Whitney into the family home, he hoped she would be the maternal influence his daughter Amy needed. However, it quickly became evident that Amy viewed Whitney not as a mother, but as something darker than he could have imagined. He never expected his new girlfriend to do something so sinister.

Meet the Jacobsons

Forty-two-year-old Eric Jacobs lived in Hartford, Connecticut with his young daughter Amy. Eric worked as a radiologist, spending long hours in a dark lab reading scans. He worried about leaving Amy with a babysitter so often, but he needed to work hard to provide for her.

Eric had a very challenging few years and he was finally starting to feel like himself again. He couldn’t have predicted that another challenge was just waiting around the corner, one that threatened to tear his family apart all over again.

Losing Martha

When Amy was just four years old, her mom Martha had been diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. Martha had fought with everything she had to stay around for her husband and daughter, but the cancer had been too strong. The devoted wife and mom passed away six months later, leaving Eric and Amy in pieces.

The pain of losing his wife was almost unbearable, but Eric knew he had to be strong for Amy. Nothing could have prepared him for the task of being a single dad.

Single Dad

For the first year after Martha’s death, Eric was in survival mode, just trying to do everything he could to make sure Amy’s life was happy and stable. Sometimes he failed, but he never stopped working as hard as he could to be both a mother and a father to his daughter.

Now Amy was seven years old and the two had fallen into an easy familiar rhythm. Amy missed her mom terribly and loved her dad fiercely, but she had grown into a curious, giggly little girl who loved reading and drawing. Eric didn’t realize he was about to disrupt the peaceful home he’d finally managed to create for her.

Meeting Whitney

Eric met Whitney at a singles event for healthcare professionals. She was an occupational therapist with an infectious laugh and she didn’t seem put off when Eric admitted he was a recent widower which often seemed to scare prospective partners.

The two began to date and it wasn’t long before Eric found himself falling for her. He felt guilty to find love again so soon after Martha’s death, but he knew his late wife would have wanted him to find happiness. Little did he know that it wouldn’t just be happiness that Whitney would bring to his life.

Maternal Influence

Another reason why Eric was so delighted to meet a woman was because he felt guilty about the lack of maternal influence in Amy’s life. She had one aunt, but she lived far away on the West Coast, and he worried that she would miss out on not having a mother to teach her about all things feminine.

He hoped that Whitney would be able to fill part of the gap left by Martha. Whitney had no children of her own and she was keen to meet Amy and become part of the Jacobson family. He never could have anticipated how wrong it would go.

Moving In

A few months later, Eric invited Whitney to live with him and Amy. The two were very happy together and Eric was ready for the three of them to settle down together. Amy had met Whitney a few times and been shy, but he was sure she would come out of her shell once she got to know her new stepmother better.

“Now Ames, I know it’ll be a big change, but I want you to be a big girl and help me make Whitney feel welcome. Can you do that for me?” he said. Amy nodded mutely. She didn’t look so sure.

Difficult Start

Once Whitney officially moved in, Eric realized that his vision of a new happy family had been idealistic. Whitney tried her best to bond with her new stepdaughter, but Amy was sullen and withdrawn, clinging to her dad or hiding out in her bedroom for hours on end. She was restless and jumpy, always with huge dark circles around her eyes.

Eric hoped it was just an adjustment period and that Amy would come around. He tried to make sure she knew she was still his number one priority, but he could tell she resented sharing him with Whitney. He would soon realize there was a lot more than resentment building up.

Amy’s Fears

Eric made sure to check in with Amy regularly to see how she was feeling about their new situation. He could tell she was very suspicious of Whitney and her place in their lives. “What exactly are you worried about, hon?” he asked kindly.

“What if Mommy looks down from heaven and sees Whitney in our house and it makes her sad?” Amy asked, her lip trembling. Eric gave her a big hug. “Mommy would just be happy to see that Whitney’s here helping to look after you, I promise,” he assured her. He hoped his promise would be enough.

Wicked Stepmother

Unfortunately, Amy’s suspicions about Whitney went from bad to worse. The avid reader loved fairytales and had convinced herself that Whitney was a wicked stepmother—always the villain in her favorite stories. Amy continued to act out, running away from Whitney when she tried to chat to her or even being downright rude to her.

Eric was starting to lose his patience and he knew Whitney was very upset about Amy’s reaction to her. He decided to have a talk with his daughter to try and get things sorted out.

Don’t Be Silly

Eric took Amy out to their favorite cafe and sat her down with a hot cocoa. “Listen, Amy, we need to talk about Whitney. I know in Snow White and Cinderella, the stepmothers are mean and cruel, but life isn’t like your storybooks. Whitney just wants to get to know you and take care of you and you’re making that a little hard,” he said.

“From now on, I want you to give Whitney another chance. I know you’ll love her just as much as I do once you let her in,” he went on. Amy sipped her cocoa, but didn’t respond. Eric prayed he was getting through to her.

Things Get Worse

As the next weeks went by, Eric realized his daughter hadn’t listened to a word he had said and things continued to spiral. Amy refused to speak to Whitney, giving her the silent treatment at meals and barricading herself in her room after school. When Whitney tried to help with homework, Amy snapped, “You’re not my mom!”

One evening, Amy threw away a meal Whitney had made, claiming it was “poisoned”. Whitney was clearly hurt, while Eric felt torn between defending his partner and comforting his daughter. The tension was palpable, and no matter how hard Eric tried to mediate, it seemed like every day brought a new battle between Amy and her stepmother.

Poison

After the dinner incident, Amy latched onto the idea of Whitney trying to poison her. Every time they were alone together, Amy warned her dad that Whitney was like the evil queen in Snow White, trying to get rid of her. “She’s trying to poison me at night time,” she insisted and refused to go to bed until hours passed her bedtime.

Eric brushed it off, reassuring his daughter that that was just a fairytale and Whitney would never try to poison her or anyone else for that matter. He was at his wit’s end and this absurd new suspicion was about to tip him over the edge.

Strange Behavior

However, it wasn’t long before Eric noticed that Whitney was acting somewhat strangely. In the evenings after Amy had gone to bed, she would hover around, seemingly waiting for Eric to go to the bathroom or take a phone call.

Once or twice, he spotted her slipping something into her pocket as though she didn’t want him to see. Amy’s words about poison flashed into his brain, but he shook his head. He trusted Whitney—there was no way she was actually doing anything to scare or hurt Amy. Was there?

Saying Goodnight

A few nights later, Eric went into kiss Amy goodnight after she’d finally agreed to go to bed. Her well-thumbed copy of Snow White was lying open on the floor and she was sitting up in bed, her face pale and her eyes wide.

Eric sat down on the edge of the bed and stroked her hair and felt that she was trembling. “What’s up, sweetie? Are you not feeling well?” he asked, feeling to check if her forehead was hot, but it was ice cold and clammy. What his daughter said next sent shivers down his spine.

Rescue Me

“Daddy, please don’t make me sleep here tonight, she’s going to come and get me again,” Amy whimpered. Eric sighed again, frustrated that they were still having this ridiculous conversation over and over again.

However, when the tired dad looked into his daughter’s eyes, he was shocked to see that she was genuinely terrified. This was no play-acting by a bored or resentful child, it was pure fear and it scared him. He thought back to Whitney’s odd behavior and something clicked inside him.

Guest Room

Eric realized at that moment that needed to protect his daughter no matter what. That’s what Martha would have wanted. He scooped Amy up, bedding and all, and carried her through to the guest bedroom and settled her into bed. “Don’t worry, Amy, we’re going to get to the bottom of this,” he assured her.

He felt guilt bubbling uncomfortably inside him. Should he have taken her claims more seriously before? It seemed so unlikely that Whitney would be doing anything untoward, but he had to find out and he knew exactly how he was going to do it.

Setting Up a Camera

While Whitney was preoccupied with a TV show, Eric dug around in his closet until he found the nanny cam he had used when he first had to leave Amy with babysitters. It still worked. He placed it in her bedroom, facing the bed and then tucked Amy’s pillows under the comforter so it looked like she was still there.

He knew he was acting a little crazy but he needed to see the truth for himself before he mentioned anything to Whitney. There was no point confronting her if he didn’t have any evidence.

Next Morning

Heart pounding and mouth dry, Eric barely slept all night. He’d tried to act normal around Whitney but she’d noticed how tense he was. He told her he was stressed about a last-minute meeting and she’d seemed placated but inside he was seething.

He waited until Amy had gone to school and Whitney had left for work before heading into Amy’s bedroom. Nothing seemed to be out of place—the pillows were still tucked under the comforter, Snow White was open on the floor. Still, as he reached to grab the nannycam off the shelf, he had an uneasy sense that someone had been in the room since he’d left it the previous evening.

Reviewing the Footage

Hands shaking slightly, Eric set up his laptop at the kitchen table and plugged the nannycam into the USB port. The footage began to load. In his rational brain, he hoped the footage would simply allay his fears, confirming that Amy had just gotten into a panic over nothing.

However, deep down, he had a strong feeling that his daughter had been warning him of something terrible and he simply hadn’t been prepared to listen until now. He watched the grainy footage with bated breath.

Caught in the Act

He sped through the slow minutes which showed nothing but an empty bedroom. His phone buzzed suddenly and he was about to turn away when he caught a flicker of movement on the laptop screen.

Amy’s bedroom door had opened and sure enough, Whitney had slipped into the room like a shadow. In shock, he watched as Whitney approached his daughter’s bed. What she did next made his blood run cold.

Eric’s Horror

The footage clearly showed Whitney reaching into her pocket and putting something into the water glass on Amy’s bedside table. Eric rewound the video and watched it again, checking to make sure he wasn’t seeing things.

Amy had told him time and time again that her wicked stepmother was poisoning her and here was proof that Whitney was sneaking into her stepdaughter’s bedroom in the dead of night and pouring some unknown substance into her water. Eric was horrified, not to mention racked with guilt that he hadn’t done anything sooner. He gripped the table, his mind reeling. It was hard to know what to do next.

Calling Max

It took Eric a long time to regain composure as he replayed the footage over and over again, searching for an alternative explanation, but none came. Once the reality had sunk in, he knew he needed to act, and fast. Amy was safe at school, but Whitney would be home from her first therapy client soon.

Eric scrolled through his contacts, looking for someone he knew could help him. Maybe it was extreme, but this was his daughter’s safety and he couldn’t take chances. “Max, I need your help,” he said gravely. “I need to report a crime,” he continued. His friend, a local police officer, answered promptly.

Cops Arrive

Eric explained everything to Max over the phone and the helpful police officer was ready to jump into action. He agreed it sounded very suspicious and offered to come check things out himself. He arrived at the Jacobson home, along with his partner, just 15 minutes later.

Eric showed them the footage and Amy’s bedroom, including the glass of contaminated water which still sat there, untouched. Max sniffed it and made a face. “She added something to it, alright,” he said in a low voice. The next moment, they heard the front door click open. Whitney was home.

The Confrontation

Eric headed down the stairs with the two cops in tow. Whitney froze at the sight of them, her eyes darting between Eric and the officers. “What’s going on?” she asked, her voice shaky. Eric’s expression was stone-cold. “We know what you’ve been doing, Whitney. I saw it—you sneaking into Amy’s room, putting something in her water,” he said, trembling with anger.

Whitney paled, taking a step back, hands raised. “What? No, there’s been a mistake. I was just—,” she began. “You can explain at the station,” Max interrupted. “But for now, you’re coming with us,” he went on sternly. Whitney’s breath caught as she looked desperately at Eric.

Completely Distraught

Whitney’s voice cracked as she tried to explain, her hands trembling. “Eric, you have to believe me—I wasn’t hurting Amy. I love her! There’s a misunderstanding here. Please, listen to me!” she pleaded. Her eyes welled with tears as she glanced frantically between Eric and the officers, her breath coming in ragged gasps. “I would never harm her, I swear! You’ve got it all wrong,” she continued.

Eric stood firm, jaw clenched, as Max stepped forward, gripping Whitney’s arm. “You don’t understand! I was trying to help her,” she cried, resisting slightly. But her pleas fell on deaf ears as they led her toward the door.

Revealing the Truth

As the officers led her away, Whitney’s voice broke through in desperation. “It was chamomile! I put chamomile tea extract in her water to help her sleep better,” she said. She twisted toward Eric, her eyes pleading. “I noticed Amy was always so restless, so tired ever since I moved in. I just wanted to calm her down, to help. I didn’t tell you because I know how you feel about herbal remedies—you never believed in them,” Whitney went on.

Eric faltered, the words sinking in. Could this be the answer? Whitney’s intentions seemed innocent, but could he trust her? He gazed at her for a long moment and realized she was telling the truth.

Trying Her Best

After the truth about the chamomile extract came to light, Whitney was left heartbroken. She had only wanted to help Amy sleep better, not realizing the misunderstanding would spiral into such chaos. Despite the hurt, she remained patient, knowing that it would take time to rebuild trust. Whitney apologized to both Eric and Amy, acknowledging she should have been upfront from the start.

Though Amy was still wary, Whitney tried her best to quietly show that her intentions were pure. Little by little, her actions spoke louder than her words, and a tentative peace began to settle over the household.

New Family Dynamic

In the aftermath of the misunderstanding, the Jacobsons had to relearn how to co-exist as a family of three. Wracked with guilt for doubting both Whitney and Amy, Eric made a conscious effort to support his partner while also ensuring Amy felt safe. Whitney, meanwhile, took a step back, giving Amy the space she needed but always offering her gentle presence.

Eric and Whitney had long talks, laying out clear boundaries and priorities for their blended family in a way that the young girl could understand. Slowly, Amy softened, understanding that Whitney wasn’t a villain, but someone who genuinely cared. Together, they began to heal, forging a new, stronger family bond.

Looking to the Future

When Eric’s wife Martha died, leaving behind her young daughter Amy, Eric did his best to create a stable home for his daughter. Once he met Whitney, he hoped she could provide the feminine influence that he knew his daughter needed. However, Amy’s active imagination and love of fairytales coupled with Whitney’s misguided attempt to help her new stepdaughter settle led to a misunderstanding that almost tore their family apart.

We’re so glad the Jacobsons are now on the path to healing and reconciliation. With the truth revealed, Eric, Whitney, and Amy can rebuild their family on trust and understanding and write their own fairytale.
